FRISCO, Texas – The New England Revolution Under-17 squad played its first game of the 2011 Generation adidas U17 Cup on Monday night, suffering a 7-1 loss to Toronto FC. The Revolution’s U17 squad for this annual Major League Soccer youth development tournament is composed of players from both its Under-16 and Under-18 teams.
New England and Toronto came out of the gates looking evenly matched, with both teams seeing opportunities in the opening two minutes of play. The momentum began to shift to favor the Reds as the game continued, however, and Toronto FC struck first in the 17th minute. Three more goals – including a penalty kick – saw the Revolution enter halftime facing a four-goal deficit.
On the other side of the break, the Revs surrendered two more goals in the 47th and 50th minutes before scoring one of their own. Devin Devoy (North Attleboro, Mass.) found Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.), who buried the ball into the upper 90 to put New England on the score sheet in the 68th minute. Toronto scored once more in the 79th minute, making the final score 7-1.
The Under-17s play their second group game on Tuesday, July 26, against the Colorado Rapids – who are coming off of a 4-1 loss to Chivas USA – at 7:30 p.m. ET.
