FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – All three of the Revolution Academy’s youth teams were home last weekend, going a combined 2-0-1 against BW Gottschee at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, June 1. The Under-18s, who officially clinched a spot in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs with their win, and the Under-16s each earned victories – 2-1 and 1-0, respectively – while the Under-14s battled to a 2-2 draw.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s earned a 2-1 victory against BW Gottschee on Saturday, and officially clinched a place in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs. New England scored in the ninth minute, when Leandro Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) slipped a through ball to Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) who lobbed the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Willis Griffith (Amherst, N.H.) later doubled the Revs’ advantage, netting a half volley from 20 yards out in the 60th minute. BW Gottschee’s Matthew Mahoney then scored in the dying minutes of the game to make the final score 2-1. Now 15-5-3 (48 pts.), the U18s are ranked third in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference with 2.09 points per game and have officially claimed their third playoffs spot in four seasons (2010, 2012).
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s topped BW Gottschee, 1-0, on Saturday. Following a scoreless first half that included saves on two free kick chances by Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass.), the Revs buried a 65th-minute goal that proved to be the game-winner. Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.) took on and beat a defender, continuing his run to the end line, where he whipped in a cross for Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) to finish. Revolution goalkeeper Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) made one save en route to the U16s’ second straight shutout. Now 11-6-6 (39 pts.) on the season, the U16s are currently fifth in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference with 1.70 points per game and hold the 11th of 13 wildcard spots for the playoffs with two games remaining.
UNDER-14s
The Under-14s played BW Gottschee to a 2-2 draw on Saturday, closing out their 2012-13 U.S. Club Soccer season with a record of 13-3-2 (41 pts.) and 2.28 points per game. The visitors scored first in the 12th minute, but New England’s Levy Hernandez (Worcester, Mass.) answered one minute later with a goal set up by Justin Rennicks (S. Hamilton, Mass.). Hernandez then netted a second goal in the 23rd minute, this time combining with Santiago Cardona (Winthrop, Mass.). BW Gottschee equalized in the 32nd minute and the score held through to the final whistle.
The Under-18 and Under-16 teams close out the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season on the road this weekend, traveling to Epping, N.H., to take on Seacoast United on Saturday, June 8, before continuing on to Purchase, N.Y., to play FC Westchester on Sunday, June 9.
