FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution youth teams traveled to New York during the weekend, meeting FC Westchester in Purchase, N.Y., on Saturday, June 2, before taking on Albertson SC in Hempstead, N.Y., on Sunday, June 3.
Combined, the Revs' youth teams went 2-1-1, with the U16s earning a pair of wins on the road.
UNDER-18s
On Saturday, the Under-18s suffered a 1-0 loss to FC Westchester. After a scoreless first half, Westchester capitalized on a counterattack. Tre Ming score in the 57th minute, giving the home side the lead. While the Revs were unable to equalize, the game provided an opportunity for several U16s to play up an age level. Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) started, while Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass.) entered the game as a second-half substitute. Will Szostkiewicz (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) both earned their first call-ups, but did not see any action.
The U18s then played Alberston SC to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Buoyed by the return of players who had missed the previous day’s games because of high school graduations, the Revs came out strong in the first half. But the teams remained deadlocked until the 83rd minute, when Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) scored on a direct free kick from approximately 25 yards out. Albertson’s Brett Nelson then found the late equalizer during stoppage time, making it 1-1 in the 91st minute to give the teams a point apiece.
UNDER-16s
On Saturday, the Under-16s topped FC Westchester, 3-1. The Revs scored first in the 20th minute, Steven Duncan (Barrington, R.I.) heading home a cross from Kevin Herrera (Lynn, Mass.). Westchester’s Jonathan Gamboa equalized in the 27th minute, and the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1. On the other side of the break, Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute, assisted by Zach Herivaux (Brookline, Mass.). New England then added an insurance goal in the 79th minute. Amadu Kunteh (Salem, Mass.) received a pass from Ryan Kingsley (North Attleborough, Mass.) in the Revs’ half, beating several defenders and going one-on-one with Westchester goalkeeper Scott Levene to close out the match.
The U16s earned a 1-0 win against Albertson SC on Sunday. While both teams created chances in the first half, they entered the break goalless. In the 69th minute, Kunateh put the Revs ahead, assisted by Freddie Ferre (Waltham, Mass.). Albertson was unable to equalize and Revolution goalkeeper Bruce Johnson (Brewster, Mass.) earned a shutout – his first since joining the club earlier this season.
With the loss and the draw, the Under-18 team has a 9-9-4 (31 pts.) overall record and with its 3-2-1 division record is now in fourth place in the Northeast Division in U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference. With the pair of wins, the Under-16 team is now 14-6-2 (44 pts.) overall and its 4-1-1 divisional mark has the team in third place in the division.
The youth teams will return to Gillette Stadium this weekend, playing Oakwood Soccer Club on Saturday, June 9, before taking on South Central Premier on Sunday, June 10.
