FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution youth teams kicked off the second leg of the 2011-12 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season on Saturday, March 10, traveling to Washington, D.C., and going a combined 1-1-0 against D.C. United.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s suffered a 4-2 loss to United, going down two goals in the opening 30 minutes of play. New England began to stage its comeback just before the break, when Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) received the ball from Ramiro Osorio (Hooksett, N.H.), beat his defender one-on-one and pushed his shot past United goalkeeper Alec Dockser in the 42nd minute. The Revs then equalized in the 60th minute, stemming from a free kick. Midfielder Dominik Machado (Attleborough, Mass.) sent the ball into the box, where Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) emerged from the scramble to find the back of the net. An own goal put the Revs back in a hole in the 68th minute, when a sliding clearance instead directed the ball into the net. Colin Martin then doubled D.C.’s lead in the 76th minute, handing the Revolution U18s their second loss of the season.
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s came away with a 3-0 victory against D.C. on Saturday, scoring all three goals in the second half. The first came in the 59th minute, when Matthew Nyeayea (Worcester, Mass.) scored an athletic bicycle-kick goal off a header from teammate Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass.). The Revs then doubled their lead in the 80th minute when Steven Duncan (Barrington, R.I.) streaked down the right wing, serving a cross for Kevin Herrera (Lynn, Mass.), who slid in for the finish. McCabe scored a goal of his own in stoppage time, lobbing United goalkeeper Sergio Reyes from nearly 40 yards out to make it 3-0. New England goalkeeper Matt Mozynski (Bellingham, Mass.) had a standout performance, making eight saves to ensure a shutout win.
The Under-18 and Under-16 teams both hold 4-2-0 records (12 pts.) on the season and remain in first place in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The Revolution youth teams are on the road again this weekend, meeting NJSA 04 in Holmdel, N.J., on Saturday, March 17, before taking on Match Fit Chelsea in West Windsor, N.J., on Sunday, March 18.
