The New England Revolution youth teams traveled to New Jersey this past weekend, meeting NJSA 04 in Holmdel, N.J., on Saturday, March 17, before taking on Match Fit Chelsea in West Windsor, N.J., on Sunday, March 18. Combined, the Revs' youth teams went 3-1-0, including a shutout win for the Under-16s.
UNDER-18s
On Saturday, the Under-18s suffered a 1-0 loss to NJSA 04. Brendan McSherry put NJSA ahead in the 43rd minute, and the Revs we unable to answer in the second half. Ramiro Osorio (Hooksett, N.H.) created multiple chances, including a free kick that was on target but saved by NJSA goalkeeper Stephen Donato. Osorio hit the post on another occasion, but the shot bounced off the woodwork and out of harm. New England goalkeeper David Hepp (Natick, Mass.) made six saves on the day, including three in one-on-one situations.
The U18s bounced back on Sunday, earning a 4-1 victory against Match Fit Chelsea. New England struck first in the ninth minute. Devin Devoy (North Attleboro, Mass.) beat multiple defenders to find Manuel Andrade (Boston, Mass.), whose shot across the face of goal beat Match Fit goalkeeper David Greczek. Match Fit’s Tanner Sica answered with the equalizer in the 24th minute, but the Revs reclaimed the lead in the 44th. Defender Forest Sisk (Sudbury, Mass.) sent Osorio down the left wing, ultimately burying the ball in the back of the net. On the other side of the break, Devoy’s work rate again paid dividends, when the fourth-year Rev finished Osorio’s free kick with a diving header in the 48th minute. Devoy added an additional assist in the 57th minute, springing Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.), whose tally made it 4-1 and further ensured the victory for New England.
UNDER-16s
On Saturday, the Under-16s downed NJSA 04, 2-1. After a scoreless first half, NJSA’s Austin Lenart put the home side ahead in the 57th minute. New England then went down to 10 men in the 65th minute, when Matt Nyeayea (Worcester, Mass.) received a second caution and subsequent red card. Undeterred, the Revs came back to equalize three minutes later, when Danny Apajee’s (Cranston, R.I.) shot hit the post and was collected by Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.). Gissie’s shot then found Freddie Ferre (Waltham, Mass.), who buried the ball to level the score. In the final minutes of play, New England earned a corner kick. Christian Sady’s (North Andover, Mass.) service bounced around in the box and NJSA was unable to clear before Will Szostkiewicz (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute.
The U16s earned their second victory of the weekend on Sunday, shutting out Match Fit Chelsea, 1-0, behind Gissie’s goal in the 28th minute. Steven Duncan (Barrington, R.I.) dribbled down the right flank, playing the ball to Gissie’s feet, and the six-foot forward then maneuvered around a pair of Match Fit defenders and fired a shot past goalkeeper Taylor Culp. Gissie continued to create opportunities as the game progressed, but was denied by a combination of goal-line clearances and athletic goalkeeper saves. Revolution goalkeeper Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) made five saves to preserve the victory and earn his third clean sheet of the season.
