CLUB CAREER OUTSIDE OF MLS: Has played for club teams in Switzerland, Italy, Lithuania, Scotland, and Germany before joining MLS…Began professional career as a teenager in 2002 with Swiss club FC Basel, playing primarily in their reserves…Later moved to FC Winterhur of Switzerland’s Challenge League (second division) in July 2004 ahead of the start of the 2004-05 season…Six months later, joined Italian Serie B side Venezia on loan for the second half of the season…Returned to Switzerland following loan, signing with Swiss Super League side FC Thun for the 2005-06 season…Made 26 appearances for the club in the first half of the season, including 10 in the UEFA Champions League…Helped Thun qualify for the Group Stage, where they finished third in a group that featured Ajax, Arsenal, and Sparta Prague…In January 2006, sold to Lithuanian club FBK Kaunas, who loaned the defender to Hearts in the Scottish Premier League…In two and a half seasons with Hearts, played in 34 games before spending the 2008-09 season on loan with FC Nurnberg of the 2. Bundesliga…Played 16 games in all competitions…Returned to Scotland for the 2009-10 campaign, playing 23 times, and scored first two goals for the club…Following a knee injury that kept out of action for part of 2010, returned to Switzerland to join Swiss Super League club FC St. Gallen in January 2011…Played 17 times for the club and notched one goal before moving to fellow Swiss club FC Sion ahead of the 2011-12 season…Played 22 times for FC Sion before joining the Revolution on loan ahead of the 2013 MLS season.
NATIONAL TEAM (PORTUGAL): Represented Portugal at the Under-21 level…On the roster at the 2007 UEFA Under-21 Championship in Netherlands…Appeared in one game during the tournament…Teammate of players such as Nani, Joao Moutinho, Silvestre Varela, and Hugo Almeida.
PERSONAL: Born in Lisbon, but moved to Switzerland at the age of two…Fluent in six languages, including Italian, French, German, Portuguese, English, and Spanish…Earned high praise from Revolution supporters, being named the Midnight Riders Man of the Year in 2013.
