FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen was voted Major League Soccer’s player of the week following his two-goal, one-assist performance in the Revolution’s 4-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, May 12. The Major League Soccer player of the week is selected each week by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).

WATCH: Lee Nguyen's stunning goal from distance

Nguyen had a career night against Vancouver, the team that waived him one week before the start of the 2012 season. He scored the game-tying goal in the sixth minute, and then struck for a stunning half-volley from distance off a throw-in in the 72nd minute. His second goal is one of five nominees for MLS goal of the week. He also earned an assist on Saer Sene’s goal in the 24th minute when his through pass split Vancouver’s defense and allowed the French forward a one-on-one chance against the goalkeeper.

Nguyen not only scored his first goal in MLS on Saturday night, but he also had his first multiple-point outing of his MLS career.

Nguyen’s player of the week nod is his first in MLS, and the Revolution’s first of the 2012 season. It’s also the club’s first weekly honor since Week 2 of the 2010 season.

The Revolution returns to action on Saturday, May 19, when the club hosts the Houston Dynamo at 7:30 p.m. at Gillette Stadium. The club will honor Armed Forces Day with a “Salute to Heroes” that night, with activities and events at the game recognizing and honoring our nation’s military personnel.
