Midfielder Carles Gil voted MLS Player of the Week

Gil Player of the Week

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil has been voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for Week 9 following New England’s 3-2 win against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, June 23. This marks the second consecutive match week in which a Revolution player has been voted Player of the Week, after goalkeeper Matt Turner took home the honor for Week 8 following last Saturday’s 3-2 win at New York City FC.

Gil registered primary assists on all three of the Revolution’s goals, helping the team extend its win streak to five games and its unbeaten streak to six games. He played Tajon Buchanan in on goal with a chipped pass in the 26th minute (WATCH GOAL), knifed a perfectly weighted pass through New York’s backline to DeJuan Jones in the 32nd minute (WATCH GOAL), and finally assisted Gustavo Bou’s game-winning goal with a one-touch through ball in the 51st minute (WATCH GOAL).

Through 10 games this season, Gil owns 10 assists – double that of any other player in Major League Soccer. By reaching 10 assists through 10 games, he has equaled the fastest to that total in a season in MLS history. Gil also paces the league in several other statistical categories, including chances created, big chances created, chances created from open play, chances created from set play, dribbles completed, and successful corners + corners. The Revolution’s captain signed a new contract with the club on May 24 that will keep him in New England through the 2024 season.

DeJuan Jones, who scored his first goal of the season in Wednesday’s win, also earned a spot on the league’s Team of the Week for Week 9.

This marks the fourth time in Revolution history the club has had players voted Player of the Week in consecutive weeks. Steve Ralston (Week 14) and Adam Cristman (Week 15) were recognized in the 2008 season, while Taylor Twellman (Week 7) and Brian Kamler (Week 8) were recognized during the 2003 campaign. In 1997, Chiquinho Conde (Week 10) and Alberto Naveda (Week 11) took home the honors in back-to-back weeks.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
