FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – While the New England Revolution Under-16 team was in Texas for the Generation adidas Cup, the Revs’ Under-18 and Under-14 teams were each in action in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy over the last two weekends.
The U-18s suffered a 1-0 loss to Seacoast United in their only game since the start of April, snapping a six-game unbeaten streak, while the U-14s have gone 2-0-1 in the first three games of the month.
The Under-18s saw their six-game unbeaten streak snapped last Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Seacoast United. The U-18s had been 3-0-3 dating back to November 2, 2014 before falling to a Kevin Herrera goal by Seacoast. The Revolution dominated possession throughout the match but Seacoast created the better chances by hitting New England on the counterattack. U-18s goalkeeper Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.), making his season debut after a preseason injury, made four saves to keep his side in the game before Seacoast grabbed the game-winner in the 74th minute.

The Under-14s earned a 2-0 win over Seacoast United last Saturday, pushing the side’s winning streak to six games dating back to November 8, 2014. The Revs pulled ahead in the 19th minute, when Nico Ferrara (Somerset, Mass.) cut inside from the left and struck a shot that the Seacoast goalkeeper could only palm away, and Luis Blanco (Pawtucket, R.I.) was on hand to finish the rebound, putting the Revs up 1-0 with his third goal in the last four games. The score remained the same until late in the second half when Jonathan Ferreira (Ashland, Mass.) put the U-14s 2-0 up. A ball was knocked into the Seacoast area and after a scramble, the loose ball fell to Ferreira 12 yards out and the forward hit a first-time shot into the corner of the net. Revolution goalkeeper Ryan Manning (Middleton, Mass.) made one save on his way to recording his third shutout of the season.

The Under-14s kicked off a weekend doubleheader with a 2-1 win over Met Oval at Medway High School on Saturday. The Revs fell behind early, with Davide Clarkson putting Met Oval 1-0 up after five minutes, but New England responded before the halftime break with another poacher’s goal from Blanco. In the 24th minute, Ferreira found space in the Met Oval area and fired a shot on goal that the goalkeeper could only push into the path of Blanco, who tapped in the rebound and levelled the score. The Revs pushed hard for the go-ahead goal in the second half and found it in the 58th minute when Ferreira headed in from close range after the Seacoast goalkeeper fumbled a shot from distance, putting the U-14s up 2-1. The Revolution recorded 13 shots in the game while goalkeeper Manning was only called upon to make one save as the U-14s saw out the remaining time comfortably to claim the victory.

The Under-14s travelled to Connecticut on Sunday and played to a 0-0 draw with Beachside SC at the University of Bridgeport in their second game of the weekend. Both sides created chances, with the Revs recording nine shots while goalkeeper Pat Quinn (Manchester, N.H.) made four saves for his third shutout of the season and the team’s eighth. Beachside finished the game down a man when Franco Acuna was ejected in the 64th minute after receiving his second yellow card of the game, but the Revs were unable to find the breakthrough in the remaining 16 minutes of play. With the draw, the U-14s’ unbeaten streak is now eight games with the team going 7-0-1 in that time.

All three of the Revolution Academy teams are in action next weekend as they travel to take on Seacoast United on Saturday, April 18 at the Seacoast United Soccer Complex in Epping, N.H. The U-18s will kick off at 11 a.m., followed by the U-16s at 1:30 p.m. while the U-14s will finish the day at 4 p.m. The U-18s and U-16s will also host the New York Red Bulls on Sunday at Gillette Stadium, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
