FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution defender Andrew Farrell says his side’s attacking quality has shone through in June’s impressive three-game homestand.
The Revolution clinched a third straight win at Gillette Stadium with a hard-fought comeback against Toronto FC on Saturday, thanks to goals from Bobby Wood and Giacomo Vrioni.
Though the triumph lifted the Revs into second spot in the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings (and broke the club record for a best-ever start to a home campaign), sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena admitted he was left disappointed with the level of performance.
Farrell echoed the sentiments but hailed his side’s formidable firepower. Striker Wood starred against the Reds to move joint-top of the club’s scoring charts for 2023 with his seventh goal of the season, and crafted the crucial assist for Vrioni’s match-winning strike, registering a goal-and-assist combination in three games already this term – the most in MLS.
“He’s been great,” the defender said of Wood’s influence. “He was huge.
“He came in, and he’s been working hard since preseason. He had a little bit of an injury, grinded through it and when he gets chances, he usually puts them in the back of the net. As a forward, that’s what you want, and as a teammate, that’s what you want.
“It’s important for us. Dave [Romney] said earlier in the week that if we keep them [opponents] to one goal, or a clean sheet, we probably have a chance to win. These [offensive] guys are starting to click – Carles [Gil] has been flying at the level he has, with Gustavo [Bou], Bobby, Giacomo scoring; Ema [Boateng] has been great … I could go down the list! All these guys are doing really well.
“If we do our job in defense with Djordje [Petrović], we’ll be able to get wins, and that always feels good.”
Of Arena’s analysis, Farrell agreed: “That’s pretty spot on. We didn’t start off too great, but obviously got the goal, then got the one called back [for offside]. We got back into the game.
“It was important to get that goal before the half, because no matter how teams are doing in this league, if you give a team a little bit of a lifeline; they can punish you.
“Bobby getting that goal was huge, and then we were just trying to build back into the game, and obviously getting that second one through the Giacomo and Bobby combination – with Carles playing them through – it was huge to get that second goal.
“We were under siege for the last 15-20 minutes. We want to get better at finishing games out – whether it’s a one-goal lead, a two-goal lead … If we would have got the third goal, it would have been a little bit easier, but credit to them – they kept putting us under pressure, and obviously Djordje made some big saves, and guys made plays when they needed to.
“Obviously, we want to be up by a couple more goals and limit chances, keep the ball for the rest of the game, and end the game on a better note. We want to finish that game a little bit stronger, so we can be a little bit more comfortable, and earn our three points.
“For the most part, everybody played a pretty good game. We didn’t do too well at the end of the game, but to get three points in this league is always tough, and it’s important to do it at home.
“We’re pretty banged up right now, so it's just kind of getting through the games, and obviously we did a good job at the last couple of home games that we had, so we just have to keep on churning out results.
“We’ve had three games at home, and three wins, and now we move on.”
The triumph over Toronto also saw the return of Ryan Spaulding to New England action. The defender had been recalled from his loan spell at the Tampa Bay Rowdies earlier this week to bolster the backline, with DeJuan Jones away on international duty with the United States Men's National Team at the Gold Cup.
Spaulding completed the full 90 minutes on his first Revs appearance of 2023, and Farrell acknowledged his contribution.
“He did great,” he added. “I think he grew into the game. He had a good 85 minutes – the first five just getting into the game, playing with us. He's been playing with other guys for the past month and a half, two months, but he did great.
“We know he's got potential, and he's played well down in Tampa. I'm happy to see him get a shot and play with us, and I think he did well.”
