RECENT FORM VS. AUSTIN FC
Saturday night's showdown in Foxborough will be the first-ever meeting between the Revs and Austin FC, which joined MLS as an expansion side for the 2021 season. With trips to visit Minnesota United FC (September 9) and the Colorado Rapids (September 16) on tap the next two weekends, this begins a stretch of three straight games against Western Conference opposition, having played just three games against the West through the end of August. Those three games came back in March and April, when the Revs claimed a 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo and 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City, sandwiched around a 4-0 loss to Los Angeles FC.
The Revs (13-5-7, 46 pts.) will be hoping to cap off a perfect two-game homestand on Saturday night, having claimed a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls midweek. That victory kept the Revolution unbeaten at Gillette Stadium in the regular season (10-0-3), one of just two teams leaguewide (along with Supporters' Shield leaders FC Cincinnati) yet to lose on home turf. With three points on Wednesday night the Revs reclaimed sole possession of second place in the East, and they'll be looking to solidify their place near the top of the conference with now just nine games left on the schedule.
Austin FC (9-12-5, 32 pts.) have dropped below the playoff line in the Western Conference, suffering five straight losses in all competitions since mid-July. The Texas side dropped a pair of 3-1 setbacks to Liga MX opposition in the group stage of Leagues Cup, and has since returned to MLS action with three consecutive defeats to St. Louis CITY SC (6-3), FC Dallas (1-0), and Seattle Sounders FC (2-1). Defending has been the biggest concern for Austin FC through the current stretch, having conceded 15 goals during their five-game losing streak.
Saturday night presents an important opportunity for the Revs to collect three more points at home before heading out on the road for the better part of September, playing three straight road games in Minnesota, Colorado, and Chicago.
