FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution Academy forward Jonathan Ferreira has been called in to the U.S. Under-14 National Team for a week-long training camp. Ferreira, who is one of 36 players called in to the U-14 team by head coach Brian Johnson, traveled to Carson, California earlier this week ahead of the start of the camp. The Ashland, Massachusetts native will return to New England following the conclusion of camp on Sunday, two weeks before the beginning of the 2015-16 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season.
“Jonathan made a real impact when he joined us last season, and he deserves this opportunity,” Revolution director of youth development Bryan Scales said. “This is another chance for him to continue his development with other elite players from his age group, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he brings back with him for the new Academy season."
Ferreira is preparing for his second season with the Revolution Academy, having joined as part of the Revolution Under-14s ahead of the 2014-15 season. He made 24 appearances, including 14 starts for the U-14s, tallying 13 goals – placing him second on the team – and four assists. The 14-year-old also made one substitute appearance while playing up with the Under-16s.
Ferreira was recently called in to the U.S. Youth National Team Futures camp – also held in Southern California – along with fellow Revolution Academy players Tyler Freitas, Amos Shapiro-Thompson and Kevin Vang. That camp ran from May 23-26 and was focused on the most talented players born in 2000 and 2001 who also happen to be on a later physical development growth path, with the hope to eliminate the relative age effect on talent identification.
