FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution have traded midfielder Lee Nguyen, 31, to Los Angeles Football Club in exchange for $700,000 in allocation money with potential to result in up to $950,000 based on the deal’s conditions. The transaction occurred before the close of the Primary Transfer Window on May 1 at 11:59 p.m. CT.
In exchange for the veteran midfielder, the Revolution receive $350,000 in General Allocation Money and $350,000 in Targeted Allocation Money from LAFC. The total amount of allocation money could rise up to $950,000, and New England could receive LAFC’s natural first-round pick in the 2019 or 2020 MLS SuperDraft.
“On behalf of the club, I'd like to thank Lee for his years of service," said Revolution General Manager Michael Burns. "Every decision is made in the best interest of the club, and we feel this move helps strengthen our team now and puts us in the best position to succeed in years to come."
Nguyen joined the Revolution in 2012 and spent six seasons as one the league’s most productive attacking midfielders. In his regular season MLS career, all with New England, Nguyen recorded 191 games played, 185 starts, 51 goals, and 49 assists. In the postseason, including the Revolution’s run to MLS Cup in 2014, he made eight starts and added two goals with four assists. Nguyen also recorded one goal and three assists in 12 U.S. Open Cup contests with the Revs.
The Texas native leaves his mark on the club’s record book, as he ranks second all-time in goals, assists, and shots. Nguyen is one of two Revolution players with at least 40 goals and 40 assists, and also leads New England in all-time penalty kick goals with 16. His impressive 2014 campaign, which featured 20 goals including the MLS Cup Playoffs, earned him Team MVP honors and a finalist nod for the MLS MVP Award.
