LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The New England Revolution fell to Louisville City FC (USL), 3-2, in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt 2018 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday evening. The match took place at Lynn Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville. A back-and-forth first half saw the two sides level at the break, but a stunning goal from City’s Brian Ownby in the second frame gave the hosts the victory and eliminated New England from the tournament.

New England jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute when midfielder Mark Segbers finished a loose ball into the back of the net for his first Revolution goal. Louisville City equalized shortly after with a goal from Oscar Jimenez, assisted by Brian Ownby, in the 11^th minute. The Revs took the lead once again in the 26^th minute as a touch across the face of goal from Femi Hollinger-Janzen was put in by Louisville City defender Patrick McMahon for an own goal. City evened the match at 2-2 in the 37^th minute when striker Cameron Lancaster slotted a low shot past Revs goalkeeper Brad Knighton.

In the second half, Brian Ownby gave Louisville City FC its first lead of the night as he gained possession and delivered an impressive strike into the upper-left corner. That 62^nd-minute tally proved to be the game winner as the Revolution move to 8-3-3 all-time against USL competition in U.S. Open Cup play.

New England returns to MLS action on Saturday, June 9 when the club takes on the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. The match kicks off at 8:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast locally on NBC Sports Boston, where Brad Feldman and Paul Mariner will be on the call. Fans may also listen on the radio in English on 98.5 The Sports Hub and in Portuguese on 1260 AM Nossa Radio. The club will then remain on the road for a clash with the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, June 13.

Segbers Scores First Revolution Goal

• Midfielder Mark Segbers tallied the match’s opening goal, his first in a Revolution uniform, in the fifth minute. Louisville City goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski failed to corral a pass from his teammate and left Segbers an open shot on net.
• While on loan with Orange County SC this season, Segbers scored two goals and added three assists in 11 USL appearances, including eight starts.

Bye-Femi Connections Forces Own Goal

• New England’s second goal of the match came on an own goal from Louisville City’s Patrick McMahon. Defender/midfielder Brandon Bye delivered a long cross into forward Femi Hollinger-Janzen near the back post, who then flicked a pass across the six-yard box that was deflected into the net by McMahon.
• The Revolution have now benefitted from two own goals across all competitions this season. The other came on New England’s first goal against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 26.

Farrell Makes Return to Louisville

• Louisville, Ky. native and University of Louisville alum Andrew Farrell made his return to his alma mater’s campus for tonight’s match. Farrell made the start at center back and played a full 90-minute shift.

Revolution Make 10 Changes to Starting Lineup

• Revolution Head Coach Brad Friedel’s first U.S. Open Cup lineup saw 10 changes from the club’s most recent MLS match on June 2 vs. New York Red Bulls. Defender Andrew Farrell was the only holdover from the last match.
• Four Revs players made their 2018 debuts for New England: goalkeeper Brad Knighton, defender Nicolas Samayoa, midfielder Mark Segbers, and forward Femi Hollinger-Janzen. It marked the Revolution debuts for Samayoa and Segbers, and the first professional appearance for Samayoa.
• Defender Antonio Delamea was suspended for the match due to a red card received at the conclusion of New England’s 2017 Quarterfinal match.
