FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ā The New England Revolution Academyās Under-16 team was back in action this past weekend as they continued play in the qualifying round of the Generation adidias Cup. The Under-16s travelled to Orlando, Fla. for a pair of East regional qualifying matches against Atlanta United and Orlando City SC. New England defeated Atlanta United in regulation, 3-2, on Saturday, February 18 and followed up the victory two days later by defeating Orlando City SC, 1-1 (4-3 in PKs). Recording three points for the regulation victory and an additional two points for winning in PKs, the Revs earned five of a potential six points on the weekend.
Generation adidas Cup play continues on April 7-15, where the Revolution will play in the Premier Division of the competition against teams to be determined.
The Revolution Academyās Under-16 and Under-14 teams will return to the pitch on Saturday, March 4, when they will host New York City FCās Under-16 and Under-14 teams at East Providence High School in East Providence, R.I.
WEEK HIGHLIGHTS
- Defender Tyler Freitas '00 (North Attleborough, Mass.) recorded a pair of assists, including the game-winning assist, in the Under-16s 3-2 win over Atlanta United.
- Midfielder Isaac Angking '00 (Providence, R.I.) posted a goal and an assist over the weekend. Angking made just his second and third appearances with the Academy this year as he has been in the U.S. U-17 Menās National Teamās Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla.
- Midfielder Nick Firmino '01 (Somerville, Mass.) scored the game-clinching penalty in the win over Orlando City SC. In addition, Austin Causey'01 (Groton, Mass.) saved Orlandoās final PK attempt to seal the victory.
- Forwards Tim Ennin '00 (East Hartford, Conn.) and Gustavo Cassemiro '00 (Framingham, Mass.) and defender Pierre Spiegel'01 (Amherst, Mass.) found the back of the net for the Revs this weekend.
- Midfielders Joe Brito '99 (Bolton, Conn.), Trevor Burns'01 (Southborough, Mass.), and Kevin Vang '00 (Cranston, R.I.) have all spent time with the Revolution first team in Tucson, Ariz. for MLS Preseason. Brito made an appearance in the Feb. 18 Desert Diamond Cup match against the Colorado Rapids, playing the final 20 minutes of the contest.
- Under-13 goalkeeper Eliot Jones '03 (New Britain, Conn.), midfielder/forward Patrick Leal'03 (Newton, Mass.) defender/midfielder Morris Matthews '03 (Cambridge, Mass.), and defender Zach Sardi-Santos '03 (Newton, Mass.) were called in to the U.S. Boys Under-14 National Team.
