Revolution Academy Update: Generation adidas Cup

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution’s Under-16 team competed in the Premier Division of the Generation adidas Cup last week in Dallas. The Generation adidas Cup is Major League Soccer’s annual elite youth tournament for U-17 academy teams. For this final stage of the competition the Revs sent a combination of their U-16 and U-14 sides. The Revolution began play in the Generation adidas Cup in October 2015 with three games in Toronto before they played another three games in February 2015 in Sanford, Florida. The Revs finished sixth in their preliminary group with a 0-4-2 record and qualified to the Premier Division for the final stage of the tournament.


The Revolution were placed in Group D and played fellow MLS Academy sides Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers, as well as Mexican club C.F. Monterrey. The U-16s finished third in their group with a 1-2-0 record before playing Chicago to a draw, then falling in penalties and suffering a 6-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids in their final match. All five games were played at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas.


The Revolution Under-18, Under-16 and Under-14 teams will be back in action this week as they travel to Danbury, Conn. to take on Beachside SC.  The U-14’s will play on Saturday, April 2, while the U-16s and U1-8s will play on Sunday, April 3.


The Under-16s opened Premier Division play on March 18, falling to C.F. Monterrey, 2-1. The Revolution opened the scoring early, as Amos-Shapiro Thompson (Worthington, Mass.) found Tyler Freitas (North Attleborough, Mass.) to give the Revs a 1-0 lead in the third minute. Monterrey, however, equalized in the sixth minute, where the score remained level throughout the remainder of the first half. Monterrey scored its second goal of the match in the 65th minute, which proved to be the game-winning goal. Revs’ goalkeeper Trey Miller (Springfield, Mass.) recorded five saves in the defeat.

The Revolution continued with group play two days later, falling to Sporting Kansas City, 3-0. Sporting Kansas City’s Maxi Rugova opened the scoring in the 29th minute, converting a rebound opportunity after Eddie Walsh (Westwood, Mass.) stopped his initial penalty attempt. Sporting extended its lead in the 52nd minute, where a bouncing ball found its way into the back of the net. The final goal of the match came in the 56th minute, as Grayson Barber gave Sporting Kansas City its third goal on the day.

New England’s final Group D match on March 22 saw the Revs pick up its first victory, 2-1 over the Portland Timbers. Alex Clarke (Windsor, Conn.) opened the scoring for the Revolution, burying a chance created by Tim Ennin (East Hartford, Conn.). Portland equalized just before halftime in the 39th minute, bringing the two sides level. The Revs regained the lead in the 62nd minute, however, as Elio Firmino (Somerville, Mass.) found Ennin for the Revolution’s game-winning goal.

The Revolution’s first match post-group play on March 24 saw the U-16s fall in penalties to the Chicago Fire following a scoreless draw. Revolution goalkeeper Trey Miller (Springfield, Mass.) recorded six saves, holding the Fire scoreless prior to penalty kicks. The Revs managed one shot on target, but weren’t able to breakthrough, leaving the match scoreless.

The Revs concluded the 2016 Generation adidas Cup on March 26, a 6-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids in their final match. The Rapids opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Colorado extended its lead shortly before halftime, registering a 38th minute goal. The Rapids scored a pair of goals in the 49th and 50th minutes to extend their lead to four. Colorado added an additional goal in the 56th minute, and scored the final goal of the match in the 67th minute to conclude the match.
