Academy Teams vs. Boston Bolts

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ā€“ The New England Revolution Under-16 team began play in the Generation adidas Cup last weekend, travelling to Toronto and picking up one point with a 0-2-1 mark in their three East Regional games. The Revs played to a 2-2 tie with D.C. United and fell 4-3 on penalty kicks on Oct. 9 for their only point in the competition, before falling 5-1 to the New York Red Bulls on Oct. 10 and 2-1 to Orlando City SC on Oct. 12 to close out the trip. The Revs will return to action in the Generation adidas Cup in February 2016 when they travel to Orlando, Florida for three additional games. The tournament is held annually and involves solely MLS Academy teams.

The Under-16s kicked off their Generation adidas Cup schedule with a 4-3 penalty kick loss to D.C. United, following a 2-2 draw between the sides. The Revs got off to a quick start, with Justin Rennicks (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Gabriel Meireles (Everett, Mass.) combining in the D.C. half to slip through Meireles, who stroked a low finish into the corner to make the score 1-0 in the ninth minute. Fifteen minutes later, the U-16s doubled their lead, with Ohad Yahalom (Brookline, Mass.) picking up a loose ball in the midfield and finding Rennicks, who got the ball out of his feet and hit a powerful 25-yard strike into the corner, putting the Revs 2-0 up.

D.C. United hit back before halftime, with Casim Zekoua reducing the deficit to 2-1 heading into the break. The score was level in the 50th minute when SahrFelix Sandy found the net for United, and it would remain locked at 2-2 until the final whistle. The Revs suffered a 4-3 defeat on penalty kicks, and picked up one point for the draw while D.C. took home two points with a penalty kick victory.

The Revolution fell to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the New York Red Bulls the following day in their second East Regional group game. Goals either side of halftime from Omir Fernandez put the Red Bulls 2-0 up, but the Revs U-16s were able to pull a goal back in the 45th minute. After captain Tyler Freitas (North Attleborough, Mass.) was fouled in the New York half, Gabriel Meireles swung in the free kick and Calvin Aroh (Glastonbury, Conn.) looped a header over the Red Bulls goalkeeper and into the back of the net, making the score 2-1.

That was as close as the Revs would come to mounting a comeback, with Fernandez completing his hat-trick in the 56th minute and the Red Bulls adding late goals through Jack Valderrabano and Bratislav Petkovic to make the final score 5-1.

The Under-16s closed out their trip to Toronto with a 2-1 loss to Orlando City SC. For the second time in three games, the Revs went ahead early, with Laz Dorogi (West Boylston, Mass.) finding the net in the third minute. Ohad Yahalom played a low ball into the box that eluded several players in the center of the area and Dorogi arrived at the far post to finish into the corner and make the score 1-0 in favor of the Revolution.

Orlando City equalized through Jose Aldaco Jr. in the 50th minute before being reduced to 10 men when Jordi Avila was shown his second yellow card four minutes after his team equalized. Despite being a man down, it was Orlando City that would score the winner as Landen Haig converted a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining to give his team a 2-1 victory.
