FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution defender Chris Tierney underwent a successful surgical procedure on Thursday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, the club announced today.
The procedure was performed on Thursday morning by Dr. Scott Martin at Massachusetts General Hospital. The Wellesley, Mass. native was placed on the club’s Season Ending Injury (SEI) list on June 1. He is expected to be sidelined for approximately nine months.
Tierney, 32, suffered the injury in the 43rd minute of the club’s match on Wednesday, May 30 against Atlanta United FC. Tierney was removed from the match just prior to halftime and following further testing, was revealed to have torn his right ACL.
An 11-season veteran of MLS, Tierney is the longest-tenured field player in New England Revolution’s history. He ranks third in club history with 246 MLS appearances and fourth with 220 games started. He also ranks among the Revolution’s top players all-time in assists (third), game-winning assists (second), and minutes played (fourth).
