FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution Academy Under-16 team advanced to the quarterfinal stage of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs last week, going 2-0-1 to top Group A. The Revolution U-16s will now travel to Philadelphia next week to take on the Union on Wednesday, July 8 at the PPL Park training facility, where the winner will advance to the Academy Championships in Carson, California.
The Revs U-16s travelled to Westfield, Indiana last week and opened their Group A play on Tuesday, June 23, coming from behind to earn a 3-2 victory over the Capital Area RailHawks despite being two goals down at halftime. New England then earned a 2-0 win over the Crew SC Academy Wolves the following day which meant that the side needed only a draw against Seattle on Friday, June 26 to clinch first place in the group and a spot in the quarterfinals. The Revs were locked in a 1-1 tie with Seattle in the 68th minute when the game was abandoned due to severe weather conditions, and the result held as the Revs U-16s finished their group play in first place with a 2-0-1 record for seven points.
After the group stage of the Academy Playoff’s was complete, goalkeeper Trey Miller (Monson, Mass.) and defender Daniel Jones (West Hartford, Conn.) were each named to the 2014-15 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Conference XI for the Eastern Conference.
A few days before the U-16s began their playoff action, the U-14s were also in Indiana for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Showcase where the Revs went 2-1-0. The U-14s began their play on Friday, June 19 with a 4-0 win against SC United Battery before earning a 3-0 win over fellow MLS Academy side the San Jose Earthquakes the following day. The U-14s finished up their Showcase on Monday, June 22 with a 5-1 defeat to FC Golden State.

UNDER-16s
The Revolution Under-16s earned a 3-2 comeback win over the Capital Area RailHawks to open their playoff campaign. Alexander Rose scored a pair of first half goals for the RailHawks as the North Carolina side took a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break. The Revs came back strong in the second half as Daniel Jones cut the Revs’ deficit in half in the 59th minute, when he exchanged a one-two with Isaac Angking (Providence, R.I.) on the top of the box before slotting a shot into the near post from close range to make the score 2-1. The Revs pulled level in the 73rd minute when Angking was again involved in a one-two play, this time with Izaiah Jennings (Barrington, R.I.) before Angking beat RailHawks goalkeeper William Butterfield from inside the six-yard box. With the game seemingly heading for a tie, the Revs found a winner deep into second-half stoppage time. Aaron James (Amherst, Mass.) dribbled into the RailHawks area and was brought down by Butterfield, who was shown a straight red card for the foul, and Isaque Couto (Marlborough, Mass.) stepped up to convert the penalty kick and make the final score 3-2.

The Revolution U-16s earned a 2-0 win over the Crew SC Academy Wolves on Wednesday, June 24. The Revs took the lead in the ninth minute when Izaiah Jennings brought the ball toward the Wolves area and played in Alex Clarke (Windsor, Conn.), who hit a left-footed shot into the far corner to put the Revs 1-0 up. Clarke was again heavily involved when the Revolution doubled their lead in the 25th minute, dribbling into the Wolves box before being taken down. Isaque Couto stepped up to convert his second penalty kick in as many games and close out the scoring. The Revolution would finish the game with just nine players as Aaron James and Andrew Barrowman (Marshfield, Mass.) were each shown red cards late in the contest, but they held on for the 2-0 win. Revs goalkeeper Trey Miller made five saves to preserve his side’s lead and his first shutout in playoff action as New England claimed sole possession of first place in Group A after the second round of games.

The Revolution U-16s drew with Seattle Sounders FC 1-1 in their final Group A game, clinching top spot in Group A and advancing to the Playoff Quarterfinals. After an even first half, Seattle took the lead in the 54th minute when Stephen Murray set up Tyler Black for the go-ahead goal. The Seattle advantage would last only four minutes as Izaiah Jennings equalized with his first playoff goal. Substitute Andrew Talcott (Westwood, Mass.), who had only entered the game a minute earlier, found Jennings at the top of the Sounders box and he shifted the ball to create a yard of space before firing into the top corner with the Seattle goalkeeper stranded. The game was suspended in the 68th minute due to severe weather conditions and was abandoned after an hour delay, with the 1-1 scoreline holding as the final score.

UNDER-14s
The Under-14s opened up their Showcase play with a comfortable 4-0 win over the SC United Battery behind a 17-minute hat trick from leading scorer Gustavo Cassemiro (Framingham, Mass.). The Revs took the lead in the opening minute of play when Jonathan Ferreira (Ashland, Mass.) played a ball through for Cassemiro who fired a shot high beyond the goalkeeper to make the score 1-0. The Revs were 3-0 up in the 17th minute after two quick-fire goals from Cassemiro to complete his hat trick. First, Tim Ennin (East Hartford, Conn.) dribbled around a defender in the box and put in a cross that Cassemiro finished in the 16th minute before Ferreira again set up Cassemiro with a low ball across the six-yard box that the forward tapped into the back of the net. The Revs completed the scoring just before halftime when Amos Shapiro-Thompson (Worthington, Mass.) found Ferreira inside the Battery area and he fired a first-time shot into the back of the net to make the final score 4-0.

The Revs U-14s carried that form into their next game the following day, claiming a 3-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes, with Gustavo Cassemiro adding two more goals to his tally. In the ninth minute, Tim Ennin received a pass from Samuel Deossa (Watertown, Mass.) in the box and played a ball across the face of goal for Cassemiro who found the net to make the score 1-0. San Jose went down to 10 men in the 20th minute when goalkeeper Jordan Martinez was shown a straight red card for taking down Cassemiro on a breakaway. The Revs doubled their lead in the 39th minute, when left back Connor Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) beat his man at midfield and carried the ball all the way to the Earthquakes area before sliding in a low cross for Cassemiro to finish and put the Revs 2-0 up. Haskell notched his second assist of the game in the 47th minute, playing the ball to Jonathan Ferreira on the top of the San Jose box and the forward hit a shot just inside the far post for his second goal in as many games, making the final score 3-0. Goalkeepers Pat Quinn (Manchester, N.H.) and Ryan Manning (Middleton, Mass.) split time in goal in the first two games of the Showcase, combining to make four saves without conceding a goal.

The Revs rallied in the second half and Gustavo Cassemiro scored his sixth goal of the Showcase in the 64th minute to pull the Revs within a goal. That would be as close as the Revs came, as Juan Ramirez made the score 3-1 in the 68th minute before a pair of late goals from Dorian Morrison completed the 5-1 scoreline.
