Tajon Buchanan and the Canada Men's National Team made a bit of history on Tuesday night, advancing to the final round of Concacaf World Cup qualifying for the first time since 1997.
Canada secured their place in the octagonal with a 4-0 aggregate win over Haiti, completing the two-legged victory with a comprehensive 3-0 triumph at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Ill. Buchanan played the final eight minutes off the bench and was on the field for Junior Hoilett's capper in the late stages.
Qualifying will continue in early September when eight Concacaf teams vie for three spots in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and one additional spot in an inter-confederation playoff. Canada will be joined by the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, and El Salvador in the final round. Border battles between Canada and the United States are set for September 5 and January 30.
Buchanan made his first four appearances with Canada's senior team in an 11-day span, debuting with a start and a pair of assists in a 7-0 win over Aruba on June 5, before coming off the bench in both victories over Haiti and a 4-0 win over Suriname. Now the New England Revolution winger will rejoin his club side ahead of Saturday night's visit to New York City FC (7:30 p.m. ET, TV38, myRITV, CoziTV).
